His Excellency Nelson Mandela after his release after
27 years in prison in South Africa February 1990
with Mwalimu J K Nyerere and Mama Maria Nyerere
during his visit to Tanzania at the State House
in Dar es Salaam in March 1990.
Later in his life, for recognition and appreciation, Germany Government gave Mwalimu Filipo Njau a special organ because of his great work and other achievements.
Mwalimu Mama Martha Ainainy Njau was among the first
handful of teachers who graduated and received
"Women Teacher's Certificate" that was challenged years
later after independence and became Teacher's Certificate.
Mwalimu Baba Ainainy Njau met Mwalimu J K Nyerere many
times at the State House in Dar es Salaam and other times
in Arusha and Musoma in Tanzania. Mwalimu Ainainy was the
President of TANFU (Tanganyika National Farmers Union).
After independence he founded and managed the first school
in Tanzania that educated women in sewing, fashion and
typing in order to help them be self-reliant. He also
worked for free as attorney for the poor people who had
cases in courts and visited them in their homes. Mwalimu
Baba Ainainy and Mwalimu Mama Martha had 11 children of
their own. They welcomed 13 more children from other
families who wanted their children get better education
live in their home for free until they finished their
education successfully.
Bibi Maria Filipo and Mwalimu Babu Filipo Njau:
Mwalimu J K Nyerere visited them 1967. Filipo was considered by
Germans as one of the most competent teachers at Marangu
Teacher's College in Marangu Tanzania. Mwalimu Filipo planted
with his students the forest that existed on the banks of
Una river in Marangu Tanzania many years ago in order to protect
the environment. Mwalimu Filipo composed music and sung, played
violin and organ and tuned organs. He built churches using stones.
He also sacrificed his coffee and banana plantations for
Kibo Art Gallery in Marangu to be built for the benefit of Mankind.
For many years with enthusiasm he received and guided visitors to
Kibo Art Gallery from all over the world. Later in his life, for
recognition and appreciation, Germany Government gave Mwalimu Filipo
Njau a special organ because of his great work and other achievements.
Stone House in Marangu in Tanzania Ca. 1930-1940 of grandfather and Teacher Filipo Njau
and grandmother Bibi Maria Njau used to be admired by many people. It was surrounded by
many trees that were planted for protecting the environment. Grandfather Filipo Njau used
to plant them with his students from Marangu Teachers College that was located not so far
from this house a long time ago. Bananas were planted as staple food of the Chagga people
who settled on the slopes of Mountain Kilimajaro a long time ago.
All the grandchildren used to visit grandparents Filipo and Maria during Christmas and
New Year celebrations and they had a lot of big space reserved for them on the second floor
in the attic. Grandfather Filipo used to receive every year lots of Christmas and New Year
gifts from many friends he had in Germany and USA and he used to share them with
grandmother Maria, his sons, daughters, grandchildren and friends.
Grandfather Filipo and his students planted also lots of trees along the banks of River Unna
in Marangu area and other places in order to stop soil erosion and protect the environment.
Driving to Marangu during those years, it was like driving through the jungle, thick rainy
forest with lots of beautiful vegetations, animals and hear birds and insects singing
sonorous songs together, and the air used to be so fresh and rewarding from Marangu all
the way to the top of the snows of Mountain Kilimanjaro.

Visual Artist Charles A Njau was born in Marangu on the slopes of Mountain Kilimanjaro in Tanzania with such environment, traditions, landscape, people and the Chagga Music played and danced in the two videos above. At Kibo Art Gallery in Marangu that was founded by his grandfather Filipo Njau and his uncle Visual Artist Elimo Njau, such Chagga music used to be played and danced regularly on Saturdays and people from the vicinity and beyond used to come to listen to this Chagga music and dance.
_ Kibo Art Gallery was visited by Mwalimu J K Nyerere, who was a great admirer of art, viewed the artworks at the gallery with sparkling enthusiasm accompanied by delegation from the Tanzanian government of that time on the 14th November 1967. With special dedication Chagga ceremony with music and dance were performed during His Excellency's visit to Kibo Art Gallery that included special ceremony of drinking Pombe in calabash (banana beer) as you can see in both videos, etc. Mwalimu J K Nyerere and Charles' grandfather Filipo Njau drank their Pombe from the same calabash and they passed it over to each other with great pride and amusement and beamed with pleasure and cheered each other in a traditional Chagga way. More about the visit you can find in our IAO Constitution that can be seen at this website. Please enjoy visiting this IAO website for Mwalimu J K Nyerere Artfoundation containing art works that Charles took more than 50 years to prepare specially in honour and memory of Tanzania's First President Mwalimu J K Nyerere for “IN AND OUT” (IAO) NGO that are going to be donated for the foundation that will support women artists and other disadvantaged artists for the benefit of the human race and nobody else.
